OpenWrt Router Smart DNS Setup Guide

Follow this simple guide to set up UnGeo Smart DNS on your OpenWrt router using the LuCI web interface.

Before You Start

Before changing your DNS settings, make sure your UnGeo account is active and your current IP address is added in your Client Area. If that is already done, continue with the DNS setup below.

Add your current IP address

Add your current IP address in the Client Area to allow UnGeo to work properly.

Register My IP Address

Once both are done, continue with the DNS setup steps.

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

Open OpenWrt Admin Panel

Open a browser on a device connected to your OpenWrt router and go to your router admin address. The default address is usually 192.168.1.1.

Log In to LuCI

Enter your OpenWrt router username and password to access the LuCI web interface.

Open Interfaces

Go to Network, then select Interfaces.

Edit LAN Interface

Find the LAN interface and click Edit.

Open DHCP Server Settings

Open the DHCP Server tab for the LAN interface.

Open DHCP Options

In the DHCP Server section, open General Setup and find DHCP-Options.

Enter Your UnGeo Smart DNS servers

Add DHCP option 6 with the UnGeo Smart DNS servers shown in your Client Area. This tells connected devices to use the UnGeo Smart DNS servers.

Save Your Changes

Click Save to store the LAN DHCP settings.

Apply Settings

Click Save & Apply to activate the new configuration.

Restart Connected Devices

Restart or reconnect the devices connected to your OpenWrt router so they receive the updated DNS settings.

Your OpenWrt router is now ready to use UnGeo Smart DNS across your home network.

How to Check If It’s Working

Visit the UnGeo DNS Check page to verify whether your device is using UnGeo Smart DNS correctly.

Troubleshooting

Make sure your device is connected to the OpenWrt router. Try 192.168.1.1 or the router IP address shown in your network settings.
Open Network → Interfaces → LAN → Edit → DHCP Server. DHCP-Options are usually inside the General Setup section.
Reconnect the device to Wi-Fi or restart it. DHCP DNS changes are usually applied after the device renews its network settings.
Check your WAN interface settings and disable using DNS servers advertised by your ISP if needed. Then save, apply, and reconnect your devices.
Make sure your UnGeo account is active, your current IP address is added in the Client Area, and the UnGeo Smart DNS servers were entered correctly.
