DD-WRT Router Smart DNS Setup Guide

Follow this simple guide to set up UnGeo Smart DNS on your DD-WRT router using the built-in DD-WRT admin settings.

Before You Start

Before changing your DNS settings, make sure your UnGeo account is active and your current IP address is added in your Client Area. If that is already done, continue with the DNS setup below.

Add your current IP address

Add your current IP address in the Client Area to allow UnGeo to work properly.

Register My IP Address

Once both are done, continue with the DNS setup steps.

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

Open DD-WRT Admin Panel

Open a browser on a device connected to your DD-WRT router and go to your router admin address. Common addresses include 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.

Log In to Your Router

Enter your DD-WRT router username and password to access the admin panel.

Open Basic Setup

Go to Setup, then open Basic Setup.

Find Network Address Server Settings

Scroll down to Network Address Server Settings (DHCP).

Enter Your UnGeo Smart DNS servers

In the Static DNS 1 field, enter the primary UnGeo Smart DNS server shown in your Client Area. In the Static DNS 2 field, enter the secondary UnGeo Smart DNS server. Leave Static DNS 3 empty or set it to 0.0.0.0 if your DD-WRT build requires a value.

Enable DNSMasq for DNS

Make sure Use DNSMasq for DNS is enabled.

Optional: Ignore WAN DNS

If your DD-WRT build shows Ignore WAN DNS, enable it so your router does not add DNS servers from your ISP.

Save Your Changes

Click Save, then click Apply Settings.

Restart Your Router

Restart your DD-WRT router so the new DNS settings are applied to your network.

Restart Connected Devices

Restart the devices connected to your DD-WRT router so they receive the updated DNS settings.

Your DD-WRT router is now ready to use UnGeo Smart DNS across your home network.

How to Check If It’s Working

Visit the UnGeo DNS Check page to verify whether your device is using UnGeo Smart DNS correctly.

Troubleshooting

Make sure your device is connected to the DD-WRT router. Try 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, or the router IP address shown in your network settings.
Open Setup → Basic Setup and scroll down to Network Address Server Settings (DHCP). The fields are usually named Static DNS 1, Static DNS 2, and Static DNS 3.
Enable Ignore WAN DNS if your DD-WRT build provides this option. Then save, apply settings, and restart the router.
Restart your DD-WRT router and reconnect your devices to the network. Some devices may keep old DNS settings until they reconnect.
Make sure your UnGeo account is active, your current IP address is added in the Client Area, and the UnGeo Smart DNS servers were entered correctly.
