Windows 7 Smart DNS Setup Guide

Follow this simple guide to set up UnGeo Smart DNS on Windows 7 and use your DNS settings directly through the classic Control Panel.

Before You Start

Before changing your DNS settings, make sure your UnGeo account is active and your current IP address is added in your Client Area. If that is already done, continue with the DNS setup below.

Check your UnGeo account

Make sure you have an active UnGeo account to use UnGeo Smart DNS.

Add your current IP address

Add your current IP address in the Client Area to allow UnGeo to work properly.

Once both are done, continue with the DNS setup steps.

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

Open Control Panel

Click the Windows Start button, then open Control Panel.

Go to Network and Internet

In Control Panel, click Network and Internet.

Open Network and Sharing Center

Click Network and Sharing Center to view your active network connection settings.

Open Change Adapter Settings

In the left-side menu, click Change adapter settings.

Choose Your Active Connection

Right-click your active network adapter. This is usually Local Area Connection for wired internet or Wireless Network Connection for Wi-Fi.

Open Adapter Properties

Select Properties from the menu. If Windows asks for permission, click Yes or enter your administrator password.

Select Internet Protocol Version 4

In the list of connection items, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), then click Properties.

Enter Your UnGeo DNS Servers

Select Use the following DNS server addresses, then enter the UnGeo DNS addresses shown in your Client Area.

Save the DNS Settings

Click OK, then click Close to save the new DNS settings for your network adapter.

Restart Your Browser or Streaming App

Close and reopen your browser or streaming app. If the old connection is still cached, restart your computer once.

How to Check If It’s Working

Visit the UnGeo DNS Check page to verify whether your device is using UnGeo Smart DNS correctly.

Troubleshooting

Make sure Control Panel is set to category view or search for Network and Sharing Center from the Control Panel search box.

Choose the adapter you are currently using. For Wi-Fi, this is usually Wireless Network Connection. For cable internet, this is usually Local Area Connection.

DNS changes require administrator access. Log in with an administrator account or ask the device owner to approve the change.

Your network may be managed by another program, security software, or a work/school policy. Try running Windows with administrator access or check whether another network tool is controlling DNS.

Make sure your UnGeo account is active, your current IP address is registered, and the DNS addresses were entered exactly as shown in your Client Area.

Yes. Even though Windows 7 is no longer officially supported by Microsoft, you can still manually change DNS settings through Control Panel.

No. This setup uses the built-in Windows 7 network settings. You only need to enter your UnGeo DNS addresses manually.

For most Windows 7 setups, changing IPv4 DNS is enough. If your network uses IPv6 and you notice problems, you may need to disable IPv6 or configure it separately.

Yes, but each adapter has its own settings. If you switch between Wi-Fi and Ethernet, configure the adapter you actually use.

Your DNS addresses are available inside your UnGeo Client Area. Use only the DNS servers assigned to your account.
